What Makes a Great Pilates Teacher
Not all Pilates classes are the same. And more often than not, the difference comes down to one thing: the person standing in the room with you. Equipment matters. Method matters. But a great teacher is what makes Pilates actually work.

They watch before they speak
A great Pilates teacher doesn't just demonstrate and count reps. They observe. They notice which side you favour, where your movement breaks down, where you're compensating without realising it. Before they correct you, they've already understood you.
This takes experience. You can't learn it from a certification weekend.
They correct with precision, not just encouragement
"Great job" is not a cue. Neither is "feel the burn."
A great teacher tells you exactly what to do with your body, in language you can actually act on. Not "engage your core" but "draw your lower ribs down and breathe into the back of your ribcage." The difference between a vague instruction and a precise one is the difference between going through the motions and actually changing how you move.
They know when to push and when to pull back
Pilates is not one-size-fits-all. A great teacher sees the person in front of them, not the exercise on the plan. They know when to add resistance, when to regress a movement, when to modify for an injury, and when to challenge someone who's been playing it safe.
This is what personal attention actually means. Not a smile and a name check. A teacher who understands your body well enough to make every class the right class for you, that day.
They teach you to need them less
The best Pilates teachers don't create dependency. They build body awareness. Over time, you start to self-correct before they get there. You understand why an exercise is structured the way it is. You know what you're supposed to feel, and you know when you're not feeling it.
That's the goal. Not just a better workout. A better relationship with your own body.
Why this matters at UNA
We keep our classes small because great teaching requires space to actually teach. Our teachers are experienced, not just certified. They know the full equipment system, they understand different bodies and different needs, and they show up to every class ready to coach, not just to instruct.
Because Pilates done well changes how you move. And how you move changes everything.
